Map Relief
For my map relief piece, I decided to focus on an abstract concept, rather than a literal map. Instead of mapping out a location, I mapped out the struggles I have faced in my life, that eventually led to self harm. Although it is not something I am proud to admit happened, this is my body and it is still a work of art, even with a few scrapes.
I used styrofoam board to create a frame to symbolize my body as a frame.
I used three different colored threads (red, blue, and green) to represent three major events in my life. I believe the thin thread gave a very delicate look to the piece. The texture of the tracing paper mixed with Gesso also gave a skin-like appeal.
The inspiration for this piece was my own self, as well as the idea that the human body, any body, is a work of art created by whatever higher or scientific being you believe in. Nail Board art was also a very big inspiration, and my choice to use thread came from memories of my mom teaching me how to sew, which was a very calming pastime in my times of trouble.
